The beauty of God’s Word. Paul said of the Torah, "These are a shadow of the things that are coming, but the reality belongs to the Messiah." Colossians 2. He repeated this in Hebrews 10. But what does it mean? The way we would say it is that in Christ Jesus we see what the Torah was really trying to show.
Today we’re going to look at another of those ‘lessons’ that probably you’ve never realized. Yesterday I discussed a rule in the priests that had a spiritual meaning.
Just as most people despise reading the priestly rules, they also never read the dietary laws given to Moses. We know the dietary laws were fulfilled in Christ when he said that whatever goes into a person’s mouth doesn’t defile them. But that does not mean that there is not a spiritual reveal in them.
Let me take a simple verse that everyone overlooks. This verse or saying is repeated 3 different times in Torah, “You are not to cook an animal in its mother’s milk.”
Seems simple enough. There are arguments about why this is in the Torah at all. Rabbis and scholars have argued about this being another idolatrous practice and God did not want Israel to practice it, and others argue a perversion of diet to eat something cooked in milk of its mother.
But I want to tell you what the spiritual meaning of this verse is.
Do not let the curent move of God be destroyed by the previous. If you’ve been around any new move of God, the group most often deriding the movement is the people who experienced the previous movement. When I was a teenager, I was a member of a church plant that had been birthed out of a larger church during its spiritual growth. God had moved, and they wanted to grow that. But over a few years, the first church, the planting church began to be religious, and churchy. While the church I attended had great movements of the Spirit of God, often with no room to sit in the church and people standing along the walls. When one of the leaders of the previous church heard about the move going on, this was the response: “God is moving among those people?” He couldn’t believe that God was moving on someone that wasn’t them…but the truth of the matter was, God was moving…looking for hungry hearts. But often the old move persecutes the new move.
One of the biggest hindrances to God moving in the Church today, is the church of yesterday.
The Torah warns about this…Just because God moved in you yesterday does not guarantee a move in you today….but don’t persecute those who are getting the move.
